Etisalat concludes Training programme for 40 teachers in Rivers state

Port Harcourt, Rivers; February 23, 2012: Forty teachers across Rivers state have received their certificates of completion for a training programme facilitated by British Council and sponsored by Etisalat Nigeria. These were presented at a closing ceremony which held in Port Harcourt recently.

The Teacher Training Programme which was launched in different states across the nation last year, re-trains teachers on their core discipline area and equips them to deliver a better learning experience to their pupils. Participation in the programme also enables the teachers to become Cambridge-accredited instructors, on successful conclusion of the ‘Teachers Knowledge Test’ (TKT) of Cambridge University, UK.

Key personnel at the closing ceremony included the representative of the Permanent Secretary, Director, Ministry of Higher Education, Rivers state - Mrs. Mae Solomon, and representative of the British Council, Mrs. Ijeoma Arguba. From Etisalat Nigeria were the Director of Brands and Communication, Mr. Enitan Denloye, Head Government Relations, Mr. Olumide Olayomi, Manager Corporate Social Responsibility, Ismail Omamegbe, and Regional Sales Manager, Aja Enekwachi.

Mrs. Mae Solomon, speaking during the event, said that the key to improving any society lies in proper development of young ones and hence there is a dire need to improve the skills of those who educate these young ones. According to her, “the young generation is the life-wire of any society and so there is the need to ensure that the education system is in constant supply of capable hands to train them.”

She commended Etisalat for sponsoring such a well-thought out initiative, while also urging other corporate bodies to follow in the footsteps of Etisalat Nigeria.

Addressing the audience, Mr. Enitan Denloye said that the training could not have become a reality without the support of the Ministry of Higher Education of the state, and their support has produced 40 newly trained teachers in Rivers State.

Denloye said, “we appreciate your involvement, without which this initiative would not have been successful.”

He assured the teachers who received certificates and were willing to take the Cambridge examination which Etisalat has also committed to sponsor, of their support and commitment and commended the teachers for their dedication to the profession in helping to impart knowledge.

Representative of the British Council, Mrs. Ijeoma Arguba who spoke at the event, congratulated all participants of the training programme who qualified to write the TKT examination. She said, “we were very thrilled when Etisalat decided to come on board to sponsor the training programme which had started in Nigeria in 2009 after careful research. The programme now has about 4500 participating teachers and we are glad to have 40 teachers from this state who have qualified to write the examination.”

Giving a testimonial at the ceremony, the programme coordinator for the TKT programme, Mr. Akiodi Akari, a teacher at the Model Girls Secondary School could not help but express his gratitude to Etisalat for helping the teachers gain an edge over their counterparts within the field. He said he learnt how to reach out to the students in a fruitful manner, and also acquired managerial skills in the classroom.

Via the Teacher Training Initiative, Etisalat Nigeria has trained 100 teachers in Oyo, Kaduna and Rivers state for the year 2011, and is putting in place plans to train more teachers in 2012.
