L-R: Selector Panel Secretary, Eniola Mayowa, Chairman Selector Panel, Chido Nwakanwa, Lagos NIPR Chairman, Comfort Obot Nwankwo , Chairman Organising panel,  Victoria Uwadoka Lagos NIPR Vice Chairman, Samuel Ayetutu, during the LaPRIGA Selection Committee Press Conference in Lagos

LaPRIGA is growing bigger, bolder and more significant because of the interest and commitment of stakeholders who are participating actively and increasingly showing up at the Gala night. Thanks to the public relations community.

At the recent press conference which held recently in Lagos at the Eko FM Multipurpose Hall, Agindingbi Lagos on Thursday 7th of July 2022, the Chairman  Selection Committee Mr Chido Nwakanma informed the press thus “LaPrIGA seeks to enthrone professionalism and best practices in public relations in Nigeria, starting from our perch here in Lagos. LaPRIGA 2022 will hold on Friday,  2 December 2022. The venue will be The Podium International Event Centre, Aromire Street, off Adeniyi Jones Avenue, Ikeja.”

Speaking further, he went on to say, “We are announcing additional six more categories for LaPRIGA 2022 to the awards scheme. The new awards recognize the growing diversification of public relations into many new areas as one of the essential management disciplines in the modern world.

The new categories are Best in Technology Public Relations, Best in Public Relations Education, Best in Hospitality PR, Best in Political Communication, Best in Entertainment PR, and the Best Use of Research & Measurement.

The other award categories cover Public Relations Practitioner of the year, Corporate Communication Professional of the Year, Most Influential PR professional, and Outstanding Public Affairs Practitioner of the Year.

Others are the Best brand in storytelling, the Best innovation in Public Relations, Digital and social media agency of the Year, Rising Public Relations Practitioner of the Year, Best in Crisis and Risk Communication and Excellence in Internal Communication & Employee Engagement.

Professionals would win for Excellence in Community Relations, Best in Political Communication, Best in Corporate Social Responsibility, and Best Supporter of PR. LaPriga would recognise the Agency of the year, Model Agency of all time, Public Relations Journalist of the year, and Photo & Video Journalist of the Year.

We have taken steps to build on and encourage greater participation of stakeholders in LaPRIGA. Members of the NIPR will be at the centre of the 2022 Awards in nominations and choice of winners.

Our more stringent criteria demands inclusion and community participation.”

In shedding further light on why these moves were made Mr Nwakanma enumerated some of the key pointers,

“Look at these three examples of the criteria for this year’s awards.

Agency of the year.   It would be

A Firm demonstrating the best use of public relations in the service of clients

The highest number of new account wins.

The firm whose staff get the most nominations/awards at LaPRIGA

Practitioner of the Year

Reckoning in at least three areas of public relations.

Leader of an agency or team which gets the most nominations/awards in Lapriga during the year

             Voted as best by peers.

Best brand in storytelling. The criterion is “success in making the brand’s story part of the national conversation”.

Corporate Comms Professional of The Year. The LaPRIGA criteria is that person who shows

-Skill in aligning communication strategies with organisational purpose and values

-Identifying and addressing communication problems effectively

-Building and enhancing the organisational reputation.”

In broadening the scope to embrace more categories NIPR is becoming cognizant of innovations taking shape in the industry and redefining the sector thus encouraging many more industry practitioners to key into the awards. “We are starting early to enable greater participation. Stakeholders would have at least three months to internalise the categories and criteria, prepare their submissions and canvass support. Stakeholders will participate in at least three ways:

1.            Nominate prospects in some classes.

2.            Vote for their preference after shortlisting by the Awards Panel.

3.            Enlist the sponsorship support of their organisations.

4.            Glam and show up at the awards nite”

Speaking at the event the NIPR Lagos State Chapter Chairman Mrs. Comfort Obot Nwankwo who specifically drew attention to the No 17 of the Award categories, (Best use of Research & Measurement) says the committee can now actually measure the scope of work and the inputs that has been made to enable scores for that category. She went further to use an analogy on how agencies and entries win awards “Its like a beauty pageant, we chose the most beautiful girl, because they showed up. It doesn’t mean that we do not have beautiful girls somewhere else, and that is why this selection planning is to use the press in the future so that members are aware that this is going on. Come up and show, give us proof of what you have done. When you are selected and you are awarded, it would be very obvious that you earned it”

This year’s awards have a Theme of 3 Ts, Truth, Trust and Transparency, which surmises that PR as a tool would rather build bridges than indulge in propaganda, using this to magnify the work that members of NIPR do to make sure the profession is well aligned and regarded in high esteem.
