From Artist to Fashion Designer

By Lu Yawen

A form of 'wearable art', artists are finding that their art is taking them to the realm of the fashion industry. We reckon that fashion directors borrowing the artistic flair of a natural creative is not new but we definitely have been noticing the trend in collaborations. We recognise that some artists involved might not be designing apparel per se but they usually have creative control over their contributing artwork and how it is placed on the clothing. Nevertheless, it's a trend that is picking up with artists and here's a brief round-up on the more prominent collaborations we've come across.

Before we start on the well-known street artists, let's not forget the recent high profile pairing of
Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama whose mental illness of seeing dots has proven to be her most defining feature in her artwork. Other prolific collaborations include Takashi Murakami x Louis Vuitton andKAWS x Comme des Garcons

And moving away from the luxury end of the spectrum, artist collaborations with street labels seem more like a natural progression especially with street artists. Stussy recently led the way with its Guest Artist Series which gathered a range of artists who originally use different mediums such as ParraDavid ShrigleyJames GallagherHiroshi Tanabe and Adrian Johnson

Some artists, though, have practically adopted the role of fashion designer by creating their own clothing line such as KAWS OriginalFake and Shepard Fairey's Obey. It's a smart move considering the stable flow of income the artists are able to get, allowing them to be able to take on projects they believe in (e.g. Shepard Fairey for Obey x Levi's installation at Times Square).
