Beyoncé has become the topic of a new course offered at Rutgers University.
The New Jersey college's Department of Women's and Gender Studies will teach 'Politicising Beyoncé' to students interested in learning about the 'Countdown' singer's career and her cultural and political significance in the Western world.
The class, taught by PhD student Kevin Allred, aims to examine all aspects of Beyoncé's public life, from her song lyrics and videos to her alter ego, Sasha Fierce. Those elements are then related to mainstream feminist figures such as Alice Walker and Sojourner Truth.
"This isn't a course about Beyoncé's political engagement or how many times she performed during President Obama's inauguration weekend," Allred told the Rutgers University website.
"She certainly pushes boundaries. While other artists are simply releasing music, she's creating a grand narrative around her life, her career, and her persona."
Allred also responded to any would-be critics who might claim that he is unqualified to teach such a
course as a white male.
